Old Stevenage
The old town of Stevenage is full of character and history. Indeed, Stevenage only began expansion after it was declared the first new town to be built in 1946, following the Second World War. Prior to this, Stevenage was a very small town, before becoming a new town the population is estimated to have been less than 5,000. When you compare this to the current figure of around 80,000 it is easy to see the scale of the transformation.
Stevenage has a history dating back to the Roman Empire. Indeed, in 1986, when building in the Chells Manor area, 2,000 silver Roman coins were found. There is further evidence of burial sites and building remains found at various sites around the town.
More recently Charles Dickens was a regular visitor to Knebworth house, and knew Stevenage well, as a result there is a pub named after one of his novels, located in nearby Shephall.
The old town centre remains largely unchanged following the development of New Stevenage, and it is this area which has allowed Stevenage to retain its charm.
Stevenage old town is located just a short walk from the Holiday Inn Stevenage hotel.
